Plan Your Spring Vegetable Garden in Winter!
Planning in advance gives you ample time to prepare your garden for a Spring planting. Starting early will give you more time to design a planting layout and prepare your garden accordingly. It’s never too early to start preparing your garden and winter is a great time to get a head start on just that.
Winter prep!
Winter is a great time to prepare your garden soil for planting, including amending the soil with compost and other organic inputs, which can take time to decompose and enrich the soil. Along with prepping the soil, checking your irrigation to make sure it's properly working is always key to a sucessful spring growing season. If watering lines are clogged, now is the time to fix them. Take time to inspect your herbs as it's best to prune back any overwintered herbs that you may have left in your garden. Like a fresh haircut, herbs like Thyme and Rosemary will bounce back with vigor in the spring time. Once your garden is prepped and ready for the next round of crops it's time to plan your layout!

Deciding what to plant?
With cold nights leaving us dreaming of fresh tomatoes and basil, we are more than ready for spring to arrive! Near the end of winter is the perfect time to map out your garden, determine the best location for each plant based on its sun exposure and water requirements, and avoid overcrowding that can lead to reduced yields and disease issues. An early start in winter will lead to a successful garden in spring. Take advantage of your head start by deciding what varieties you would like for your ideal spring garden. Are you more of a cherry or heirloom tomato kind of person, or both? You should begin to map out your garden, remember the sunlight your garden receives will be different in the spring and summer so be sure to take that in to account when plotting where your vegetables and herbs will grow. You can take a look at our helpful Growing Guide to help you decide where your vegetable and herb seedlings will grow best.

Some of our favorite spring varieties!
We love getting an early start on our Tomatoes. Getting these planted early in spring will lead to abundant harvest all the way through the summer season. Another favorite of ours that we can't wait to get in the garden is Nufar Basil. This bountiful herb will also benefit from being planted early and will continue to provide ample harvests all the way into the summer! Of course the tried and true Cucumber is always a winner for us, especially since this vegetable can be trellised up and out of the way allowing for more space to plant a variety of seedlings.
